Importance of Cable Insulation Tensile Strength Testing

Cable Insulation tension involves stretching and pulling of the sample. It is a static measurement of the effects of tensile force on the insulation material. Knowledge of the tensile strength of cable insulation is important for the following applications:

  1. To ensure insulation material quality
  2. To develop new insulation materials
  3. To compare different insulation material types and processes
  4. To select insulation material for specific application
  5. To determine the maximum strength the insulation material can withstand
  6. Stress performance under different environmental conditions

Specimen Preparation – A dog bone or a dumbbell sample.

Tensile test specimens are normally shaped like dog bones-the center portion also called as the gage section of the specimen is smaller in cross section than the two ends. A dog bone or a dumb bell sample is named because of its shape, the specimen to be checked is cut in such a ways that it is wider at ends and narrower in between. The shape is defined by organizations such as ASTM, ISO, DIN, etc. The ends are wider into order to concentrate stress in the middle of the sample when loaded in tension. This stress concentration causes the sample to fracture away from the ends. If the fracture site of a specimen occurs in the gage section (middle area), the material has reached its maximum tensile strength. If the specimen fractures close to the grip or in the grip itself, the failure could be attributed to improper loading or a defect in the material. Tensile specimens may be round or rectangular depending on the stock on which they are obtained. Specifics of the dimensions are clearly defined in ASTM D638-14. Special machines are used to cut the dumbbell and the dimensions required are maintained by the dies of various sizes.

Test procedure - Cable Insulation Tensile Strength Testing

Test procedures are generally in accordance with an internationally recognized standard procedure like the one mentioned in ASTM D638-14 so that results are consistent between labs. But all standards like ASTM E8 (metals) and D638 (plastics) more or less follow the following steps:

Step 1 : Note the cable insulation specimen dimensions including length, thickness and cross sectional area.

Step 2: Insert a sample of a material between two fixtures or grips.

Step3: Select speed and load parameters in accordance to the standard

Step 4: Apply force to the material through the use of a universal test machine (UTM) or force testing machine.

Step 5:  Increase the force while measuring the change in length of the sample.
